Engineers Australia members must go through a 6-step process to get chartered.
Applicants must assess whether their existing industry knowledge and abilities align with the competencies supplied by Engineers Australia for the Chartered level. Even if they receive a “Developing” rating, they can still launch an Industry Review by gathering input from peers and preparing evidence statements. Furthermore, individuals are permitted to complete a new industry review whenever they desire to update their self-assessment grade, and this approach has no time limit.
Applicants with a functional rating or higher may apply to the Chartered Engineer Australia program. To do so, they must pay the cost and submit their CV/resume, CPD log, industry evaluation, and list of expertise areas in which they intend to pursue chartered status.
Evidence must be submitted for all 16 competencies the applicant self-assessed when seeking CPEng Australia recognition. Engineers Australia provides a list of acceptable evidence types per competency that must be presented when providing such proof. Engineers Australia assessors will review this self-evaluation alongside the CV/resume, CPD log and Areas of Practice documents from applicants. An evidence session will then take place with the applicant to further understand their requirements and address any concerns that they may have. Following CPEng guidelines, uploaded Chartered Evidence documents will then be evaluated within five weeks.
When the engineers have analyzed the evidence and determined it to be satisfactory, the applicant will be invited to a professional consultation. This session could be scheduled four weeks after the examination has been completed. It will last around an hour, during which the candidate may be required to present and discuss the evidence linked to their application. An Engineers Australia representative will participate in the interview as well as a board of engineers from the outside industry.
Once the consultation is over, Engineers Australia will email the candidate the results, including their Chartered Awards and Practice Areas, along with a confirmation certificate if they have attained Chartered Status. If not achieving it, however, advice and assistance can be offered through Engineers Australia in preparation for a possible second in-person interview session or appeal process if they believe Engineers Australia has judged them unfairly based on the facts provided.
