If you are a qualified psychologist planning to migrate to Australia, the APS Skills Assessment is a mandatory requirement before you can lodge a skilled visa application. Australian Psychological Society (APS) is the only national assessing authority approved to assess overseas-qualified psychologists for migration purposes. A positive Statement of Qualifications from APS is essential, as without it the Department of Home Affairs cannot process your skilled migration application or allow you to proceed with an Expression of Interest.
The APS assessment evaluates your academic qualifications, core psychology training, and professional competencies to determine whether they are comparable to Australian standards. Any mismatch in documentation, unclear course mapping, or missing evidence can result in delays or an unsuccessful outcome.
At CDR Australia Engineer, we assist psychologists from over 40 countries by confirming eligibility, preparing complete documentation, and ensuring your application is structured correctly. Our goal is to help you avoid common errors and submit a decision-ready APS application from the start.
The APS Skills Assessment is the government-mandated qualification assessment for overseas-trained psychologists seeking skilled migration to Australia. Conducted by the Australian Psychological Society, it evaluates whether your overseas psychology qualifications are comparable to a six-year APAC-accredited sequence of study in Australia assessed across three competency levels: Foundational, Pre-professional, and Professional.
The assessment measures the content, structure, and demonstrated competencies of your program, not simply the number of years studied. Completing six or more years of psychology overseas does not automatically produce a positive outcome.
Overseas-trained psychologists who wish to migrate to Australia under the General Skilled Migration program must obtain a positive APS Skills Assessment outcome before lodging a visa application. A positive Statement of Qualifications is required for the following visa subclasses:
The Society assesses the following psychology ANZSCO occupations:
Occupation | ANZSCO Code | Requirement |
Psychologist (nec) | 272399 | Default — no AHPRA endorsement held |
Clinical Psychologist | 272311 | Must hold AHPRA Clinical endorsement |
Educational Psychologist | 272312 | Must hold AHPRA Educational endorsement |
Organisational Psychologist | 272313 | Must hold AHPRA Organisational endorsement |
Critical note on occupation codes: To receive a skills assessment under Clinical Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, or Organisational Psychologist, you must hold the corresponding area of practice endorsement with AHPRA. If no endorsement is held, your assessment will confirm suitability for migration under Psychologist nec (272399) regardless of your specialization. Plan your occupation nomination carefully before applying.
CDR australiaengineer specialises in high-quality CDR, RPL and VETASSESS reports for engineers. We offer low-cost, customized and reliable services in diverse engineering disciplines.
Your overseas psychology qualifications must be comparable to an APAC-accredited six-year sequence of study in Australia. This typically means:
The assessment evaluates whether your program’s content and structure align with the APAC Accreditation Standards, not just its duration. A postgraduate qualification must include supervised professional practice components to be assessed at Level 3. A research-only master’s degree is unlikely to satisfy this requirement.
You hold unconditional general registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) at the time of your application. Where full general registration has been granted, the Society can issue a positive assessment without requiring a full academic qualification review.
Note: Provisional registration is not sufficient for Pathway 2. Only unconditional general registration qualifies. Overseas-trained psychologists applying for registration in Australia typically must complete a Transitional Program with the Psychology Board of Australia before becoming eligible for general registration this is a separate and often lengthy process from the skills assessment.
English proficiency must be demonstrated through a recognized test. Results must be within two years of your application date.
Test | Minimum Requirement |
IELTS Academic | 7.0 in each of the 4 components |
PTE Academic | Aligned with Department of Home Affairs requirements |
TOEFL iBT | Aligned with Department of Home Affairs requirements |
Applicants from English-speaking countries may be exempt — verify current requirements with the Society before applying.
The Society requires originally certified copies of all supporting documents. A copy of a certified document is not valid; each document must be individually and originally certified. Documents submitted for assessment will not be returned, so always submit certified copies of originals, never the originals themselves.
Certification: In Australia, documents may be certified by a JP, legal practitioner, notary, accountant, pharmacist, physiotherapist, police officer, or psychologist, never a family member or spouse. Each page must be individually certified, showing “certified as a true copy of the original.”
Our expert consultants will assess your profile and recommend the best pathway for your Australian migration goals.

Most delays and unsuccessful outcomes in the APS Skills Assessment process are avoidable. These are the most common causes:
Assuming duration equals comparability Completing six or more years of psychology study overseas does not guarantee a positive outcome. The assessment evaluates content, structure, and competency alignment against the APAC-accredited sequence, a program that spans six years but lacks supervised professional practice components at the postgraduate level will not meet the criteria.
Postgraduate degree without supervised practice A postgraduate qualification must include advanced coursework, research, and supervised professional practice to be assessed at Level 3 APAC competencies. A research-only master’s degree, or a postgraduate diploma without practicum, is unlikely to satisfy the six-year equivalent requirement.
Applying under the wrong ANZSCO occupation Applying under Clinical Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, or Organisational Psychologist without the corresponding AHPRA area of practice endorsement results in a downgraded outcome to Psychologist nec (272399) which may affect your visa points score and state nomination eligibility.
Incorrectly certified documents A copy of a certified document is not valid — only originally certified copies are accepted. Documents certified by a family member or spouse are explicitly rejected. Each document must be individually certified with the required statement on every page.
Expired English language results Test results older than two years from the date of application are not accepted. Always check the issue date of your results before submitting.
The APS Skills Assessment involves strict APAC competency alignment requirements, occupation-specific AHPRA endorsement rules, and originally certified document standards. Errors at any stage cause delays — and with an 8-week processing window and no fast-track option, avoidable mistakes are costly.

It is the mandatory qualification assessment for overseas-trained psychologists applying for skilled migration to Australia. The Department of Home Affairs requires the APS Statement of Qualifications before processing any psychology-skilled visa application.
No. Duration alone does not determine comparability. The assessment evaluates the content, structure, and competency alignment of your program against the APAC-accredited sequence, not just how long you studied.
No. Without the corresponding AHPRA area of practice endorsement, your outcome defaults to Psychologist nec (272399) regardless of your clinical background or specialization.
The standard assessment covers academic qualifications only. The Society offers a separate, optional Assessment of Skilled Employment History for applicants who already hold a positive outcome and wish to claim employment points for their visa application.
Approximately 8 weeks from receipt of a complete application. No priority processing is available. Incomplete or incorrectly certified documents will extend this timeframe.
No. The APS assessment is for visa purposes only. AHPRA registration is what permits you to practice as a psychologist in Australia. Both are required but completely independent of each other.
