What Is the AITSL?

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, commonly known as AITSL, is the government-designated authority responsible for assessing teacher qualifications for skilled migration purposes. It evaluates whether your academic background, initial teacher education, supervised teaching practice, and English language proficiency are aligned to Australian standards.

Unlike most skilled occupations, this is a purely qualifications-based assessment. What matters is how your degree and teacher training are documented.

Who Needs This Assessment?

Teachers applying for the following Australian skilled visas must obtain a positive outcome before lodging a visa application:

  • Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
  • Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

Note: Primary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241213) is currently listed on the STSOL, making it ineligible for the Subclass 189 visa, but you can apply through Subclass 190 or Subclass 491 pathways.

The following teacher occupations fall under this assessing authority:

  • Early Childhood Teacher (ANZSCO 241111)
  • Primary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241213)
  • Middle School Teacher (ANZSCO 241311)
  • Secondary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241411)
  • Special Needs Teacher (ANZSCO 241511)
  • Special Education Teacher (ANZSCO 241511)
  • Teacher of the Hearing Impaired (ANZSCO 241512)
  • Teacher of the Sight Impaired (ANZSCO 241513)

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility Make sure your credentials, practice teaching hours, and (if relevant) English proficiency meet the requirements for the particular teaching profession you have selected.

Step 2: Select Your Teacher Occupation Choose the ANZSCO code that best matches your teaching qualification. This decision directly affects your visa pathway, so choosing the correct one is important.

Step 3: Gather and Certify Your Documents Collect all required documents as per your occupation checklist. Non-English documents must be supported by certified translations.

Step 4: Submit via the Online Portal Create an account on the AITSL Applicant Portal, complete the application form, upload all documents simultaneously, and pay the application fee. Changes cannot be made after submission.

Step 5: Wait for your Outcome Assessment-ready applications are usually completed within 4 to 6 weeks. Your outcome statement is issued through the My eQuals platform and is valid for 2 years from the date of issue.

Step 6: Optional: Request a Skilled Employment Statement (SES) Once you hold a positive Skills Assessment Certificate, you can request an SES to strengthen your points score for skilled migration.
