AACA Skills Assessment | Expert Assistance for Architects

If you are a qualified architect planning to migrate to Australia, the AACA skills assessment is a compulsory step before you can lodge your skilled visa application. The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia evaluates whether your overseas architectural qualifications meet Australian standards and without a positive outcome, your Expression of Interest cannot proceed.

At CDR Australia Engineer, we help architects from over 40 countries navigate the correct pathway, prepare a strong portfolio, and submit a complete, compliant application the first time.

AACA Skills Assessment expert assistance for architects migrating to Australia

What Is the AACA?

The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, commonly referred to as AACA is the government-designated authority that assesses architectural qualifications for Australian skilled migration. It assesses whether foreign architects meet the requirements to Australian practice standards by comparing their professional competency, work experience, and academic credentials to the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA).

The assessing authority covers the occupation Architect under OSCA code 241131 (previously ANZSCO code 232111). A positive outcome from this assessment is required before you can apply for most Australian skilled visas as an architect.

Who Needs This Assessment?

Overseas-trained architects applying for the following Australian visas require a positive skilled migration assessment:

  • Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 494)

Architect (OSCA 241131) is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), making it eligible for the Subclass 189 independent pathway, one of the most attractive visa routes for overseas architects.

AACA Assessment Pathways

Pathway 1 — Verification of Australian Accredited Qualification
For applicants holding an accredited architecture qualification from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, or Singapore. This is the simplest pathway with document verification only — no portfolio or interview is required.

Pathway 2 — Overseas Qualifications Assessment (OQA)
For qualified foreign architects looking to immigrate to Australia. Qualification evaluation, portfolio submission, NSCA competency statements, and a competency assessment interview are all part of this pathway.

Pathway 3 — Experienced Practitioner Assessment (EPA)
Designed for highly experienced senior architects with extensive post-graduate professional experience on complex projects. Successful applicants may proceed directly toward architect registration in Australia.

Pathway 4 — UK/AUS Mutual Recognition Agreement
Available for architects holding recognized UK ARB Part 1 and Part 2 qualifications. Eligible applicants may access a simplified assessment process under the mutual recognition agreement.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualification Eligibility Your architectural degree must have been awarded by a recognised institution and must permit a graduate to register as an architect in the country where it was awarded. A 5-year qualification is the expected standard.

Work Experience A minimum of 6 months of full-time equivalent paid post-graduate architectural work experience is required (course-integrated practical experience does not count). This must be evidenced with a detailed reference letter from an employer.

Portfolio Submission A portfolio of 3 to 4 architectural projects is required, including at least one complex project (typically medium or larger scale). Your final thesis design project should be included because it offers a solid foundation for the Competency Assessment Interview.

NSCA Summary Statements Written summary statements must address all 13 Topic Areas of the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects, supported by reference drawings, sketches, or project documentation.

English Language Proficiency Required only if your architectural program was delivered in a language other than English. Evidence must follow the format outlined in the OQA Applicants Guide.

Document Submission Standards All documents must be submitted as high-quality colour scans (minimum 300 dpi) with document edges visible, with all pages of each document combined into a single PDF. Non-English documents must be accompanied by certified English translations.

Step 3 — Submit Your Application Register on the AACA online applicant portal, fill out the application, upload all necessary files at once, and pay the relevant fee.

Step 4 — Qualification and Portfolio Review After reviewing your submitted documents, AACA will send you an email with one round of feedback if any clarification or more information is required. Within the allotted time, revisions must be submitted again.

Step 5 — Competency Assessment Interview (OQA only) You will be invited to a Competency Assessment Interview if your qualification review is accepted. Through a discussion of your submitted portfolio, this online test assesses your ability to demonstrate the NSCA competencies.

Step 6 — Receive Your Outcome A Suitable (positive) outcome provides an Outcome Letter and, on request, a Skilled Migration Assessment letter for visa purposes. You also become eligible to sit the Architectural Practice Examination for architect registration in Australia.
